Medicine at the highest level, individualised and interdisciplinary

26 February 2016 | Bettina Neumann | Mallorca Zeitung

With its highly qualified doctors and state-of-the-art equipment, the Clinica Picasso offers a fast diagnosis without long waiting times.

In June 2002, four German specialists, including Dr Eigel and Dr Chadid, founded a medical centre in Palma: the Clinica Picasso. The idea was to be able to treat patients together and in close cooperation across disciplines. Meanwhile, after 15 years, there is currently no discipline that is not represented in the medical centre.

Interdisciplinary diagnostics

The interdisciplinary care centre currently employs 14 specialists in 13 medical fields, including Chinese medicine (TCM). With the exception of one doctor, the Belgian urologist, all doctors have completed their studies in Germany. All highly qualified specialists, they work as a team, i.e. they exchange information and can access each other’s patient data so that nothing has to be examined twice. All our colleagues are excellently networked and speak at least three languages, i.e., German, English and Spanish.

Today, the Clinica Picasso is the specialist centre for residents from all over the island. The location near the ring road is excellent and the parking facilities are good. What patients particularly appreciate is that time is taken for them here, and the examinations are thorough. One major advantage is the short in-house distances: if necessary, several specialists can be consulted in one day, so that, for example, in the case of patients with unexplained dizziness, the ENT doctors, cardiologists, orthopaedists or neurologists can rule out any doubts about the cause.

Although 50 percent of the patients are Germans who live on the island or have a second home, the medical centre is just as popular with the English, Swiss, Scandinavians and Russians. In the summer months, many tourists join us here as patients, and the Clinica Picasso is also a trusted doctor for the staff of Air Berlin and AIDA cruise ships. “Many patients also come to us from Germany for their annual health check-up, for example, returning migrants,” says cardiologist and internist Dr Luai Chadid, who sets aside an hour and a half for check-ups as standard. Dr Chadid is a co-founder of the clinic and a good example of the specialist expertise at the hospital: as a contract doctor, he still performs regular cardiac catheter examinations at the academic teaching hospital of Berlin’s Charité, his former place of work.

State-of-the-art medical technology

Another advantage is the state-of-the-art technical equipment, which is likely unparalleled among the medical centres iof Mallorca. Acute emergencies can also be treated very quickly, even at weekends. To this end, all doctors are on call 24 hours a day. As it is possible to react quickly at any time, the rate of hospital admissions is correspondingly low. The clinic has its own digital X-ray, video endoscopy (internal medicine, urology and ENT), its own small laboratory and state-of-the-art digital 3D ultrasound equipment. The cardiologist is the only one on the island to have a 4D ultrasound machine for the heart. All examinations are performed, including outpatient electrocardioversions, cardiac catheters, pacemakers and defibrillator implantations. Gastroscopies, colonoscopies and polypectomies are performed internally (under sleep anaesthetic – followed by a good strong espresso!). The neurologist runs a stroke unit in a private clinic, the ophthalmologist works with state-of-the-art laser therapy and the dentist also covers implantology. Just like all the other doctors, the paediatrician, psychotherapist, osteopath, physiotherapist and dermatologist are not only competent, but also excellently equipped. By linking the ENT doctors with the ENT team at Clinica Juaneda (where they also offer consultations), the treatment options correspond to those of a large ENT department.

Another plus point to be appreciated: the entire surgical spectrum is also offered. Our colleagues in ENT, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology and, of course, surgery and plastic surgery have beds in the nearby Clinica Palma Planas or Juaneda.

Further examinations such as computer tomography and MRI can be carried out there within 24 hours.

Excellent work at reasonable prices

Anyone who thinks that such high-calibre healthcare is only for millionaires is mistaken: the doctors at Clinica Picasso follow the German fee regulations. Privately insured persons receive a single service-specific invoice with the necessary transparency of the services for the health insurance and are therefore normally reimbursed on a one-to-one basis for their expenses, which they have previously paid by credit card or in cash. In addition, some doctors also have contracts with Spanish private health insurers (direct billing).

At Clinica Picasso, this flexibility and expertise is combined with an almost family-like atmosphere and a confidential doctor-patient relationship. The friendly multilingual receptionists at the two reception desks give patients a very warm welcome.
